Orthopedic manufacturing
From machining to surface finishing and inspection, the component drawing guides the work. Explore our orthopedic implant and instrument manufacturing processes, then discuss the requirements for your product.

How is the machining process chosen for a component?
The shape of the part, its material and the features on the drawing guide the choice of process. Review the current drawing, tolerances and inspection requirements together to define how the component will be made and checked.

CNC machining
Mazak equipment supports controlled cutting operations for orthopedic components. Part geometry and the agreed drawing determine the tooling and machining sequence.

3+2-axis machining
HAAS equipment provides access to different faces of a component. The setup is reviewed against the drawing and the features that need to be produced.

Swiss-type machining
Citizen equipment supports small and complex components. Dimensions, tolerances and inspection points are defined for the individual reference.

Electrical discharge machining
EDM can produce complex features in conductive materials. Its use depends on the component design and the manufacturing plan.
What needs to be checked during development and inspection?
Inspection should check the characteristics defined on the component drawing. Identify the dimensions, tolerances and surface requirements that matter to the part, then agree how they will be measured and recorded.
For an OEM order, the sample review and production specification should refer to the same approved drawing revision. Record any changes to the design or finish and agree the inspection records to be supplied with the order.

Which surface finish belongs in the product specification?
Polishing, blasting, anodising and instrument coatings serve different surface requirements. Specify the material and required finish on the drawing so the appropriate treatment can be reviewed for the component.

التلميع
An abrasive process that refines a component’s surface. The required finish is agreed for the particular material and part.

التفجير
A controlled abrasive treatment used to modify surface texture. The material, media and texture requirements form part of the finishing discussion.

الأنودة
A process that forms an oxide layer on suitable metal surfaces. The material and treatment requirements are reviewed for the specific component.

Chrome coating
A coating option for applicable instruments. Instrument material and the agreed coating specification determine its use.
What should a buyer settle before production?
Confirm the drawing, sample findings and inspection requirements before agreeing the production order.
How does a drawing become a manufacturing specification?
Provide the current drawing revision, material and surface requirements. Mark any features needing particular attention and the inspection records your team expects. Resolve questions about feasibility and included work before confirming the quotation.
If the design changes after a sample review, identify the new drawing revision and the affected parts. The production order should use the specification your team has approved.
What is the difference between a sample review and an order specification?
A sample lets your team assess an item. The order specification records what will be supplied: the reference, drawing revision, material, finish, quantities and any included instruments or packaging.
Record agreed changes from the sample review in the order specification. Check the applicable product documents and acceptance requirements for the component and destination market before approval.
